SM Lanang Premier: Davao's Newest Tourist Attraction

Upon my arrival in Davao after an extended four-year absence, one of the first questions I asked my friends was, "What's new?"

During previous visits, I'd get answers about new nature parks or new clubs or new restaurants -- but to my surprise, the most common answer I got during this trip was: "You have to see SM Lanang!"

"SM is SM is SM", I thought to myself. Although I love the airiness of SM Baguio and the Mall of Asia, I didn't think SM could come up with something new in Davao, of all places. Turns out, I was wrong.

SM Lanang, one of the new "Premier" malls of the country's number 1 mall tycoon,  is completely different from any other SM Mall that I've seen, in Metro Manila, or any other part of the Philippines for that matter. It's as sleek and elegant as the Shangri-La Plaza Mall, back when it was brand new in the mid-1990s.

I was dazzled by the towering Christmas tree, and awed by the mall's complete, but uncluttered architecture and interiors. Simply gorgeous.

It has all the guilty pleasures we've gotten used to in Metro Manila, from Starbucks to Krispy Kreme to a bevy of milk tea joints.

SM Lanang even has two of Mall of Asia's key destinations: (1) an SMX Convention Center...

... and (2) an IMAX Theater!

But my favorite part of this brand new mall, barely 3 months old, is the lovely SM Supermarket, one that really deserves the "super" in its name.

This ultra-clean, gleaming, fresh-smelling (!) sprawling grocery has everything, literally. The freshest fruits, produce, and seafood.

Literally everything that Davao is famous for is available here.

All the exotic fruits -- durian, marang, mangosteen, pomelo -- and all the famous Filipino favorites: mangoes, melons, and more.

A gorgeous grouping of grapes.

An array of apples and oranges.

Even hi-tech produce grown soil-free!

Convenient pre-cut vegetables for lazy home cooks. Like me.

A mini version of Seattle's famous Pike Place market too -- spectacular seafood sold in very safe and sanitary sections!

I love this supermarket. It's really reminiscent of the chain of Whole Foods markets so famous in North America, and it does those supermarkets one better: its gondola overflowing with Davao's best "take home to Manila" treats!

Juice Recommends:

A place you ought to visit, not for shopping but for surfing: Samar.

The Breathing Trick that Can Help You Fall Asleep Faster

The average person breathes in and out up to 23,040 times per day, but most of us do so inefficiently, taking short, shallow chest breaths while subconsciously contracting our abs, says Jane Pernotto Ehrman, a behavioral health specialist at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Lifestyle Medicine. To prepare for a restful night, Andrew Weil, MD, director of the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, recommends this breathing technique, which acts like a natural tranquilizer. …

Know Your Feelings: How to Manage 5 Negative Emotions

As my son is now at the age where he gets loudly and violently frustrated when he can't express his emotions, I've been thinking a lot about how to teach him which emotions are which. It's no coincidence that many of us would choose similar body language and words to represent a specific emotion. The researched and published Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that we really do feel different emotions in different parts of our bodies. Acknowledging how and where we feel …

11 Ways to Lose Weight (and Still Have Fun) This Weekend

Go for a long workout: Even squeezing in a quick workout during the week can be rough, so schedule a longer weekend workout. Don't hold out for a big meal: When you sit down to a special meal famished, you're far more likely to overeat and overdrink. Don't overbooze at brunch: When inhibitions are lowered with a few mimosas or Bloody Marys, it's easy to overeat without realizing - and need a nap right after the meal. Linger on a single cocktail throughout the meal; …
