Skincare brand Own launches skin analysis app

Anti-aging label Own has released an app offering users clinical skin analysis and beauty recommendations.

The My Own app is free to download from Apple's iTunes Store, Google Play, and ownproducts.com. Users upload a picture of themselves, which is sent to Own for what the brand calls "a clinical evaluation of the major signs of aging, along with nutrition, wellness and beauty recommendations based on individual aging results."

The results tell users their number of deep wrinkles, number of fine lines, percentage of face covered in hyper-pigmentation, and number of hyper-pigmented spots on their face. All of this is designed to allow skin-care fanatics to tailor their daily regimes, and product use, accordingly.

Own, which also sells anti-aging products, says it aims to attract "awareness to behaviors and practices outside of product recommendations that can maximize their (users) anti-aging routine," said Stephen Matt, the brand's Chief Marketing Officer. "We actually encourage users to track progress by submitting a new picture every 30 days. It's a new way for consumers to manage their own skin's health," continued Matt.

Own isn't the only brand trying to make headway with a beauty app. L'Oréal Paris has launched an app that helps users match their beauty products to their outfit. The Color Genius, downloadable free from iTunes, asks you to pick the colors you're currently wearing, before suggesting matching makeup shades.

Sony, meanwhile, recently announced the development of SSKEP (Smart Skin Evaluation Program), what the company calls "a highly accurate, high speed technology for analyzing various elements of the skin, including texture, blemishes, pores, brightness and coloring." SSKEP's sensor technologies and high-speed image processing are intended to allow future users even more in-depth analysis of various elements of the skin.
