Ten things to know about cellulite

If you're reading this and you're female, chances are you have cellulite. In fact, 80 to 90 percent of women have some kind of cellulite on their bodies, from slight bumps to deep grooves. Before shunning the beach in shame, here are a few tricks to minimize -- and even accept -- your dimply thighs, according to fitness blogger FitSugar on July 9.

1. Most women have cellulite, which is primarily genetic and appears on all body types, including lean, fit people. Some dermatologists say that cellulite is a secondary sexual characteristic and, contrary to beauty marketing schemes, doesn't contain "toxins."

2. If you use hormonal contraception, it can increase your risk for developing cellulite.

3. Being a mom can also trigger cellulite, thanks to hormonal changes in your body.

4. Caffeine may also be a culprit, so cutting back on coffee and soda may help.

5. Some studies show that applying retinol cream to the area helps diminish cellulite, but other studies show no effect.

6. Yo-yo dieting can also increase your cellulite. Aim toward maintaining a healthy body weight, and losing weight slowly if needed.

7. Rather than purchase a pricey anti-cellulite cream, opt for losing overall body fat by going for a run or taking a spinning class.

8. Staying hydrated can help improve the texture of your dimpled skin (and skin overall).

9. Eating well, reducing stress, avoiding smoking, and getting good quality sleep may also help with cellulite.

10. Laser, massage, and suction treatments can help temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite, but you'll need to continue to shell out cash for followup treatments to maintain the smoother look. Liposuction, however, has been found to actually make cellulite look worse.
