We Speak EXCLUSIVELY To Winona Ryder's Venice Film Festival Make-Up Artist Emma Day

When we spotted Winona Ryder at The Iceman premier at The Venice Film Festival last week, we fell in love with the Heather's actress all over again.

Winona swept on to the red carpet in a classic black Dolce & Gabbana number, complete with lace embroidery, and like the LBD, the make-up was simple yet stunning. With a dramatically shaded smoky eye offset by muted red lips, Winona was expertly channelling screen siren chic –  and we’d expect nothing less from the Hollywood star.

So, want to try the look at home? Of course you do! We caught up with Emma Day, the woman behind Winona’s sultry style, for the low down on all the behind-the-scenes beauty secrets. Emma exclusively told us ‘We wanted a chic, yet romantic lady-like look for Winona and to keep her looking as polished as normal - it was almost a classic Hollywood look.’ and here’s how she did it…

1.         SKIN

I started by prepping her skin with Sisleys new water based cleanser and applied Clarins Blue Orchid Oil which we let sink in. Then I prepped the skin with Clarins Instant Smooth Primer to perfect the skin so the base wouldn’t move. She’s infamous for her naturally beautiful skin so it wasn't hard to perfect it!

I used Chanel aqualumiere in 10/20 as Winona’s foundation and then concealed lightly with Cle de Peau Concealer (which was Winona’s own), reducing shine with a powder puff and Mac Prep and Prime Powder before lightly dusting with a fan brush.

2.         Eyes

Under her eyes I used Sisley Eye Concealer and layered it with Lancome Eclat Miracle to keep under-eyes fresh. In both the day and red carpet looks I did for Winona, I used my favourite Mac Cream Colour Base in Shell on her eye-lids and cheekbones – it’s a highlighter but gives an incredible soft and dewy look to the eyes and skin.

I primed the eyes with Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer before putting on the base colour. On the lids I used Diors 5-Colours Iridescent Eyeshadow in Earth Reflection. Then I used a more silvery shade in the inner corners of the eye and a silver Clarins Eyeliner Shimmer Pencil in the tear-ducts (a bit of a trademark but it makes the eyes sparkle). Winona’s eyes were lined thinly along the socket line with Dior Styliner in Noir to make her eyes pop and I used Chanel Les Crayon Yeux in brun inside her eyes.

I curled Winona’s lashes using her own heated lash curler to optimise the lash curl (I have never seen one of these before!) I added Origins Ginzing Mascara and topped up the lashes with Eylure Individual Lashes.

3.         LIPS & EYES

I dusted the apples of the cheeks with Chanel Blusher in Polvere and lips were Winona’s own Chanel Rouge Coco in 31 Cambon.
