Upon my arrival in Davao
after an extended four-year absence, one of the first questions I asked my friends was, "What's new?"
During previous visits, I'd get answers about new nature parks or new clubs or new restaurants -- but to my surprise, the most common answer I got during this trip was: "You have to see SM Lanang
"SM is SM is SM", I thought to myself. Although I love the airiness of SM Baguio
and the Mall of Asia
, I didn't think SM could come up with something new in Davao, of all places. Turns out, I was wrong.
, one of the new "Premier" malls of the country's number 1 mall tycoon
, is completely different from any other SM Mall
that I've seen, in Metro Manila, or any other part of the Philippines for that matter. It's as sleek and elegant as the Shangri-La Plaza Mall
, back when it was brand new in the mid-1990s.
I was dazzled by the towering Christmas tree, and awed by the mall's complete, but uncluttered architecture
. Simply gorgeous.
But my favorite part of this brand new mall, barely 3 months old, is the lovely SM Supermarket
, one that really deserves the "super" in its name.
Literally everything that Davao is famous for is available here.
All the exotic fruits -- durian, marang, mangosteen, pomelo -- and all the famous Filipino favorites: mangoes, melons, and more.
A gorgeous grouping of grapes.
An array of apples and oranges.
Even hi-tech produce grown soil-free!
Convenient pre-cut vegetables for lazy home cooks. Like me.
A mini version of Seattle's famous Pike Place market too -- spectacular seafood sold in very safe and sanitary sections!
I love this supermarket. It's really reminiscent of the chain of Whole Foods markets so famous in North America, and it does those supermarkets one better: its gondola overflowing with Davao's best "take home to Manila" treats!
