Seattle named most vegetarian-friendly city in the US

Just call it "meatless in Seattle."

After analyzing the number of restaurants online that identify themselves as primarily vegetarian, food ordering service GrubHub named the West Coast city of Seattle, Washington, the most vegetarian-friendly in the US, followed by San Jose and San Diego, both in California.

Of the 15,000 restaurants in their database, 9 percent identify themselves as meat-free dining spots.

Rounding out the top five vegetarian cities in the US, according to GrubHub, are Texan cities Houston and Dallas.

The GrubHub list differs greatly from one compiled by animal rights group PETA, which likewise released a ranking in 2010, naming Washington DC as the most veg-friendly city in the US. Coming in second was Portland, Oregon, followed by Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Previous to that, PETA gave London the world title for its variety of cuisine and breadth of vegan choices.

And travel reservation site Skyscanner in the UK named India the world's top vegetarian destination given that up to 40 percent of Indians follow meat-free diets that are rich in flavors and spices. India was followed by Belgium and Taiwan.

Here are the top 10 vegetarian-friendly cities in the US, according to GrubHub:

1. Seattle
2. San Jose, Calif.
3. San Diego
4. Houston
5. Dallas
6. Austin
7. San Francisco
8. Los Angeles
9. Denver
10. Chicago
