London mulls Rio-style Jesus statue for Olympics

London may erect a replica of Rio de Janeiro's famous Christ the Redeemer statue to mark the passage of the Olympic torch to Brazil at the end of this year's games, reports said Friday.

The 30-foot (10-metre) sculpture would sit atop Primrose Hill, one of the most popular viewing points in the British capital, according to "secret plans" uncovered by the Camden New Journal, the local newspaper.

The upscale area in north London is home to actor Jude Law, supermodel Kate Moss and opposition Labour party leader Ed Miliband.

The paper said the scheme was set to go before the local council's planning department and would be funded by the Brazilian government to mark the end of the 2012 London Olympics as Rio takes on the mantle for 2016.

The Brazilian national tourist board, Embratur, said it was "surprised" to see the story in the newspaper.

"This is only a concept that was being considered as part of a wider platform of promotional activities for Embratur and the Brazilian Government for 2012, when the focus moves from London to Rio," Embratur said in a statement, which was issued through the Brazilian embassy in London.

It said it had held consultations "to gauge local opinion for a temporary installation that we hoped would be a celebratory landmark that helped to give the London Borough of Camden and Primrose Hill an opportunity to be part of the Olympic story."

But Malcom Kafetz, chairman of conservation group the Friends of Primrose Hill, opposed the plan.

"I do not see why it should go there ... It does not represent anything of England or Primrose Hill," he told the Journal.

Arms open wide above Rio de Janeiro, the original 38-metre (125-foot) statue of Christ the Redeemer was built 80 years ago atop Corcovado hill in the city.

It is visited by more than a million people year and is the fifth largest statue of Jesus in the world.

A true Catholic Must Know How To Adore (Exalt), Venerate (Honor)

Adoration - Is only for God & Our Savior Jesus Christ (For they are one)

Veneration (Honor) - Is for Saints for their perseverance of Faith become the living testimony of Christ. Thus they are our models of faith (but whoever stands firm to the end will be saved - Mat. 24:13

If we honor our national heroes like Rizal, if you idolize celebrities and feast of their gossips! HOW MUCH MORE SHOULD WE IMITATE THE LIVES OF THIS SAINTS AS HOLY ONES!

Thus they became the light of the world with Christ! (Matthew 5:16 - Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.)

      To Fundamentalist Christians:
Peace be with you my brothers and sisters!
Allow me to clarify this but...We did not worship the images that we had. But instead we venerate them because of their great holy lives...

We pray for them because they pray for us, This the full communion with the saints.
"Pray for each other - James 5:16" , "I urge that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - 1 Timothy 2:1"

Our Most Blessed Virgin Mary Please intercede for us..
Our Venerated San Pedro Calungsod de Cebu, please pray for us...

This is the call for the prayer without ceasing - 1 Thessalonians 5:17

I humbly say thank you for reading my comment,I may be the most unworthy person to utter such words but remember...Let us love one another as Christ says " As I have loved you."

St. Peter is clearly deficted as the first among the apostles, both by Jesus and by the evangelist. St. Peter is mentioned 191 times in the New Testament. All the other apostles combined are mention by name just 130 times. And the most commonly referenced apostle apart from St. Peter is St. John, whose name appears 48 times. St. Peter's authority is unquestioned, even by St. Paul. And Peter's name appears first in virtually every listing of the apostles, just as Judas' name always appears last. If theres is a reason for a latter - which there obviously is - on what basis can we deny there is a reason for the former?
Mat. 16:15-19 - "Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah...you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of thenetherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven; and whatever you loosed on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

I'm a Roman Catholic but somehow I want to know how the Catholic churches and congregation will answer if someone from the other religion will say this "Do not make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it. I am the LORD your God. - Leviticus 26:1.
Thank you to those who will give their replies

Such lavishness! Useless. He doesn't need your sacrifices. You should have used the money spent on the statue to help others like teaching them things, or giving them seeds for them to plant.

Some Protestant apologists make much of the fact the two words for "rock" in the original Greek text, Petros and Petra , have different gender endings. They claim that the gender ending results in different meanings - usually, in the size of the "rock" in question. But the different gender endings are simply due to the fact that a man's name cannot have a feminine ending, while the Greek word for "rock" does. The error in the Protestant position becomes abundantly clear when one realizes that in the Aramaic language, which Jesus spoke, there were no gender endings for nouns. So when Jesus spoke this sentence, he would have been saying, "...you are rock, and upon this rock I will build my Church..." There would have been difference whatsoever in the endings of the words; it would have been the exact same word used twice. This is just one example of Protestatnt believers reading the scripture through the lens of their traditions, and missing the clear and obvious sense of certain key passages. The fact is, these are profoundly important verses, for they contain Jesus' unequivocal promise to protect and guide the Church he is to found, through St. Peter, to whom he entrusts the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whenever God renames someone, he is calling our attention to a truly momentous event - as in Abram to Abraham, Jacob to Israerl, Saul to Paul and Simon to Rock.

Proof that we catholics does not commit idolatry..In Lipa,Batangas a nun saw the Virgin Mary and said:

'I want a statue of mine to be placed here.I want you to describe me to your chaplain because I want it to be as you see me,and as big as the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes that is in the cloister.Tell Mother Prioress to have a Rosary recited by the community every afternoon during these days.Clean this part of the garden so that it will be a place of prayer.

How come catholics are guilty of idolatry?Even Jesus himself ask His Mother to make a statue to God's temple.

Another views,...it says....that before Christianity there was Judaism, even Jesus Christ himself was a Jew. But after Jesus left (to be with the father in heaven) His followers became known as Christians. There are still many those who are Jews they are the chosen people of God after all. But they didn't believe Jesus is the messiah and are still waiting for their messiah. But some Jews do Indeed know that Jesus is the messiah (and he really is). It's a very Important thing try to look in to the Bible and search for the truth.

Non catholics must know the Third Secret of Fatima:
The church has given permission to reveal to the people the last part of the messages.

"Go my child and tell the world;what will come to pass during the 1950's-2000's.Men are not practicing the commandments that our Father has given us.Evil is governing the world and is harvesting hate and resentment all over.Men will fabricate mortal weapon that will destroy the world in minutes.Hal of the human race will be destroyed, the war will begin against the Rome, and there will be conflicts amongst religious orders.

Those who won't believe, this is the time your beloved Mother told you. Those lacking charity towards others and those who don't love thy neighbors like my Beloved Son has loved, all, cannot survive. They will wish to have died, millions are unimaginable, they will come and there is no end.

THIS WILL BE THE THIRD SIGNAL THAT GOD IS WHO GOVERN THE WORLD! SAVE THE WORLD FROM ITS TOTAL DESTRUCTION!!
