Lady Gaga cast in Robert Rodriguez film 'Machete Kills'

Pop music superstar Lady Gaga will make her feature film acting debut in Machete Kills as a character named La Chameleon in director/writer Robert Rodriguez's (Grindhouse, Spy Kids) sequel to 2010's Machete.

A poster featuring the singer's character was released Thursday. Not exactly a novice to acting if her stage performances and videos count, she also appeared briefly in The Sopranos and on the MTV VMAs portraying a male persona, Jo Calderone.

Gaga joins an eclectic cast that includes Danny Trejo returning in the title role, along with Michelle Rodriguez and Jessica Alba, and costars Charlie Sheen as the US president, Mel Gibson as a billionaire arms dealer, Amber Heard, Sofia Vergara, Zoe Saldana, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Oscar nominee Demián Bichir.

The story follows Machete battling his way through Mexico, recruited by the US government to take down an arms dealer who claims to be launching a weapon in space.

The director tweeted Thursday: "I just finished working with @ladygaga on @Machete Kills, she kicked SO MUCH ASS! Holy Smokes. Blown away!"

The crime action thriller is scheduled to open in 2013.
