How to make sense of confusing dress codes

Do you ever stare at an event or wedding invitation and ask yourself, “What on earth does the dress code on it mean?”

What’s the difference between white tie and black tie? What does smart casual mean and how is that different from just plain casual?

To make sure you show up in the right outfit, here’s your guide to the most common dress codes for parties, weddings and events.

White Tie
·         White tie is said to be the most formal of all dress codes, where women must be in floor-length gowns and sometimes, even white gloves.
·         The dress should never be above the ankle.
·         This is the time for you to bring out your best jewelry and accessories.
·         Men are expected to be in a black tailcoat with matching pants, white vest, shirt studs, cuff links and wing-collared shirt, with black dress socks and shoes.

Black Tie
·         Black tie is still very formal but not as specific as a white-tie affair.
·         Women can dress as they would to a white-tie event but can also opt to wear a very dressy knee length dress.
·         Men are expected to wear a black tuxedo jacket with matching pants, black cuff links and studs, cummerbund and bow tie, with socks and dress shoes.

Creative Black Tie
·         What you’d wear to a black-tie event but the rules are less rigid.
·         Women can pair their knee- or floor-length dresses with fun, fashion-forward accessories as well as bright colors.

Formal
·         Refers to a mashup of white tie and black tie.
·         Women are expected to dress as they would in a black-tie event, unless a long dress is specified.
·         Men should come in a dark suit and tie or a long-sleeved barong.

Semi-Formal
·         You are not expected to go all-out on the gowns and the bling.
·         Instead, choose a nice skirt and top combination that you love and pair with killer heels.
·         Or, put on your little black dress.
·         Men can wear a suit, dressy shoes and dark socks. Don’t forget the tie.

Smart Casual
·         This is the best dress code because you can actually spruce up your day wear to make it appropriate for your event.
·         Pair your pants with a dressy top and classy pumps, or change to strappy sandals with your daytime skirt.
·         Guys can come in a sport coat and slacks.

Casual
·         It’s “come as you are” time.
·         But if you are attending a milestone event such as a wedding or a 50th birthday party, don’t show up in flip-flops and a ratty old shirt.
·         Wear a simple denim skirt with a nice top, a sundress or even jeans.

The trick is always to look neat and tidy whatever you decide to wear.
