Holiday arguments are on the rise

Booking a holiday is exciting, but booking a holiday with your partner is even more exciting. The thought of kicking back in a hammock for two, while a barman goes to work with a pestle and mortar so you can clink your Mojitos in the afternoon sun, is enough to make you grit your teeth and deal with the broken washing machine, never-ending email alerts and frequent bickers about who should do the washing up.

A holiday with your man is the remedy to any problem. It’s the dock leaf to the nettle sting, the spritz of Lacoste to the odorous blouse, right?

Well, maybe not. The Daily Mail has revealed the results of a survey by travel agent, Ebookers, which has found we argue with our partners while we’re thinking about the holiday, booking the holiday and on the holiday. That’s a lot of slammed doors and thrown ballet pumps.

HOLIDAY SEX TIPS

They discovered that more than half of couples fail to agree on a destination, for starters. Okay, so he wants to hit Las Vegas and blow money you don’t have on a game of poker that he’ll inevitably lose because 1. He’s not the cool, Ryan Gosling lothario he thinks he is and 2. He’s never really played before, unless you include playing for five pence pieces with the guys. You’d rather lap up the Indian sun, and make a la Julia Roberts in Eat, Pray, Love - just without the painful divorce.

I can see how logging onto Expedia and seeing he’s bookmarked resorts with pictures of scantily clad casino dancers could cause problems, but let us not forget, this is normal. This is what you’d expect from a guy who thinks wearing a suit from BHS is basically like wearing an Armani, and a woman who wants to ‘find herself’, or at least tell everyone she has.

WHO PERVES MORE ON HOLIDAY?

Relationship psychologist Jo Hemmings thinks that it’s more down to stress, than just a clash of personalities. She says, “The truth is we’re working harder than ever before and taking fewer holidays. So, by the time we actually go away, we’re exhausted and often irritable – the perfect recipe for arguments.” I see where she’s coming from; newspapers are always telling us that we’re stressed, but are our pre-holiday bickers actually just down to the frustration induced by a slow-loading lastminute.com page and worries about mosquito bites?

The survey also found that women usually blame the rows on drinking a little too much, while men get irritated if their partner starts checking out other men on the beach. This isn’t a special spell cast upon us just when we’re on a beach in Thailand – they’re both common causes for rows in the UK, too. When your man’s had a few too many pints and thinks you’re eyeing up the 17-year-old lad playing pool? Yeah, we’ve all been there.

SEX DO’S AND DON’TS ON HOLIDAY

It’s easy to pin it all on exhaustion and say that that’s the reason we’re having a petty argument over where that missing 50 Euro note has gone, but maybe it’s just us being human.
