The almost monsoon-like conditions in April are already threatening this year's native food. The asparagus crop has been decimated, leading to the cancellation of the British Asparagus Festival on the May bank holiday weekend. But here's what else should (hopefully) be available for our delectation.
Vegetables
Jersey royals continue to make their way over, nestling next to fresh maincrops. It’s time too to celebrate watercress, with the annual festival in Alresford in Hampshire taking place on the 22nd. If you're on the salads, don't forget radishes, spinach and spring onions. And if you fancy foraging, stock up on samphire and keep an eye out for wild mushrooms.
Meat
Spring lamb should be on the shelves this month.
Seafood
Mackerel's back on the menu. And crab is still nipping at our tastebuds. Fish-wise, some spring barbie options include salmon, sea bass and sea trout.
Fruit
Wimbledon may still be a month away but there are plenty of British strawberries on sale. And it's also time to start gorging on gooseberries.
