In 2012, the
Juice team declared bacon as the ingredient of the year. Approaching mid-year, we've noticed a new craze on the horizon… tonkatsu! Who doesn't love a tender piece of deep-fried breaded pork every once in a while? Here's our list of our favorite places to get your tonkatsu fix:
This newcomer is proud to serve the king of pork: Kurobuta or Berkshire pig, the most tender type of piggy goodness. The kitchen staff is said to be trained by a top tonkatsu chef from Japan.
Juice tip-off: Not a red meat lover? The seafood set includes melt-in-your-mouth oysters and scallops.
The secret's out. Tucked away in the basement of Palm Tower in San Antonio Village, Tonkatsuya has been serving up delicious tonkatsu at reasonable prices. A regular tonkatsu set will set you back an easy P180. The clientele are mostly Japanese expats, and their chef, who's also Japanese, has been cooking these golden chops for 30 years now. How's that for legit?
Juice tip-off: Tonkatsuya offers catering! Ring them up at (02) 896 1990 for their party packages.
This cozy dining spot can easily be overlooked since it's a ways away from all the action that takes place in Burgos Circle, but make no mistake, this little Japanese joint is not to be missed. The tonkatsu at Keizo is thick and soft with crunchy breading, and goes very well with their homemade curry sauce.
It all started when partners (and musicians) Bryan Kong and Shinji Tanaka started serving up
katsudon in the music studio. When they finally decided to open their own little resto, they knew the Chicken Katsu had to be part of the menu. A popular dining spot for music enthusiasts and
college kids, Crazy Katsu is a must!
