To help celebrate the 250th anniversary of the invention of the sandwich, the British Sandwich Association is releasing a new recipe every month.
The sarnie of the month for May? Roast beef, naturally.
Legend has it that the ubiquitous food item consumed the world over as a lunchtime staple, portable snack and one-handed meal was created in 1762 by the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, during a 24-hour gambling streak in which he called for some cuts of meat to be placed between two slices of bread.
Here's a recipe for a roast beef and wasabi sandwich which was entered in the British Sandwich Association's annual Sandwich Designer of the Year competition.
British Sandwich Week is from May 12 to 19.
Rare roast beef
Pepperdews (a small red pepper the size of cherry tomatoes that comes from South Africa and is often jarred)
Mix mayo, ginger and wasabi paste and spread along the baguette. Add the rare roast beef, and top with pepperdews and rocket.
