Color combinations to turn your room glam, chic, exotic or serene

Nothing can change the mood of a room more than color.

Use it subtly by changing the theme of your pillows and bed linens. Or, make it drastic by repainting the walls or redoing your curtains and carpets.

If you find that pairing hues can be quite a challenge, here are a few combinations that can inspire you.

You can apply these colors in any room through the use of accessories, fixtures, paint, wallpaper, upholstery and flooring.

70s DISCO

Rooms decked in bold patterns, eye-popping colors and rich textures channel this glam decade.

Major shades: Silver and gold, hot pink, black

How to achieve the look:  With mirrored and mosaic surfaces on cabinets, coffee tables and lightning fixtures. Temper the glitter with shag area rugs or bright graphic wall art.

Tip: Try stark contrasts—a brazen gold disco ball hanging from the ceiling with the oomph of bright pink pillows in shades from fuchsia to magenta strewn across a black-upholstered couch.

WORLD TRAVELER

Earthy hues that recall African safaris or backpacking through the back alleys of Bangkok.

Major shades: Tan, orange, lime green

How to achieve the look: Think exotic. Drape a rich, patterned blanket in deep browns and bright oranges across a rattan chair. Paint your walls in striking lime green, mimicking the foliage you would find in a lush tropical garden.

Tip: Ground strong colors with earthy tans, dark sands and colors you can sink your feet into.
